If something bad happened to the original 64xxx gun, like it blew up, it might have been sent back to the factory, and they replaced it with a new gun, but gave it the old serial number. After that the serial number would have began with an "N" until 1983. In 1980 S&W began using serial numbers that began with 3 letters.
